Mission Innovation is a global initiative to accelerate public and private clean energy innovation to address climate change, make clean energy affordable to consumers, and create green jobs and commercial opportunities.

It was announced by Bill Gates at COP21 on 30 November 2015, on stage with President ObamaPresident Hollande and Prime Minister Modi.

At the launch, 24 countries committed to double their respective clean energy research and development over the five years to 2020. For the US Department of Energy, this translates into an additional $4 billion by the end of 2020. The countries include the five most populous (as at 2015): China, India, the United States, Indonesia, and Brazil. All 20 launch partner countries represent 75 percent of the world’s CO2 emissions from electricity, and over 80 percent of the world’s clean energy R&D investment.

The European Union joined Mission Innovation, at its inaugural ministerial meeting that took place in San Francisco on 1-2 June. 2016, during the 7th Clean Energy Ministerial meeting. This initiative was launched at the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2015 (COP21) in Paris with the aim of reinvigorating and accelerating public and private global clean energy innovation.

Its link to private sector investment is via the Breakthrough Energy Coalition group of private investors, also spearheaded by Bill Gates and which formed in parallel at COP21.

HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud hosted a virtual MI-5 on Wednesday, 23 September 2020, where MI members agreed to work together on the development of an ambitious second phase of MI. In addition, MI will continue its successful voluntary model, with members choosing to work together on crucial energy innovation topics. Further details about MI’s next phase and its membership will be announced at MI-6 in Chile.

The Mission Innovation Champions Program seeks to celebrate and support innovative individuals who are accelerating the clean energy revolution by working on key clean energy research and technology developments. By supporting cross-border exchanges of ideas and talent and building a community of visionaries committed to the promise of clean energy research and development, the program activates and engages a new generation of researchers, inventors and leaders.

Ingelia´s CEO, Marisa Hernández Latorre, has been awarded EU-Mission Innovation Champion 2020 and as part of the support program, MI has arranged and interview on her carrier around the sustainability and HTC technology.
