The Biocoal is a high quality biofuel, with a calorific value in a range of 20-24 Mj/kg, and a bulk density of around 750 kg/m3. Thanks to the sustainability of the Ingelia HTC plant, the whole product value chain is one of the most sustainable available on the market. Using 1 ton of Ingelia biocoal as solid fuel, replacing fossil coal brings to a reduction of 2.2 kg CO2 per kg Biocoal used. Additionally, being produced from residues, the Ingelia Biocoal has an even larger contribution to the global emission reductions, as it avoids landfilling emissions and it doesn’t affect the land use.
The biocoal is a source of carbon for the soil, and it has been already used as growing media, and soil conditioner, on different plant species, with great advantages in terms of plant mass increase, fruit production, and growth rate. Carbon increase the soil quality and facilitate the production of microbial activity, with a reduced need of synthetic fertilizer. The Biocoal improve the soil water retention capacity, reducing the water demand of farming activities, increasing their sustainability. The Biocoal contains nutrients like Phosphorus, Calcium, Nitrogen, Potassium, vital elements which must be recycled to develop a real sustainable bioeconomy. 0.6 kg of CO2 per kg of Biocoal consumed in agriculture can be saved in comparison with compost.
The Ingelia biocoal represents a low cost, sustainable feedstock for advanced liquid biofuels production. The liquid biofuels production sector has been affected by the compromised sustainability of the oil-based fuels, like sun flower diesel, which are no more supported by the EC as declared not sustainable due to the competition with food and the land use. Producing biofuels like biodiesel and bioethanol from wastes is not feasible due to the feedstock dishomogenousity, to the impossibility of large scale transportation to biorefineries, and to the contaminants. Ingelia biocoal is a refined product, homogeneous, and easily tradable and transportable. Thanks to its low cost, and the good quality, this product is more and more attracting the interest of liquid biofuels sector.
