On February 11, we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The day was declared by the United Nations in order to achieve full and equal access to science and participation of women and girls, and to further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A / RES / 70/212.
However, according to the UN report, women and girls continue to be excluded from full participation in science. Today, less than 30 percent of researchers worldwide are women. According to UNESCO data (2014 – 2016), only about 30% of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. Globally, female enrolment is especially low in ICT (3%), natural sciences, mathematics and statistics (5%) and in engineering, manufacturing and construction (8%).
Female talent is needed to fight climate change, bring new technologies to market and transform our economies into more sustainable bioeconomies.
We celebrate Women in Science Day and congratulate all women who develop their careers around science and especially the Mission Innovation 2020 Champions.
