Mission Innovation is a global initiative to accelerate public and private clean energy innovation to address climate change, make clean energy affordable for consumers, and create green jobs and business opportunities.

It was announced by Bill Gates at COP21 on November 30, 2015, with President Obama, President Hollande and Prime Minister Modi.

At launch, 24 countries committed to doubling renewable energy research and development over five years to 2020. For the U.S. Department of Energy, this translated into an additional $4 billion through the end of 2020. The countries include the top five (in 2015): China, India, the United States, Indonesia and Brazil. The 20 launch partner countries account for 75 percent of global CO2 emissions and more than 80 percent of global clean energy R&D investment.

The European Union joined Mission Innovation at its inaugural ministerial meeting held in San Francisco on 1-2 June 2016, during the 7th Clean Energy Ministerial Meeting. This initiative was launched at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris with the aim of revitalising and accelerating public and private innovation in clean energy globally.

Its link to private sector investment is through the Breakthrough Energy Coalition private investor group, also headed by Bill Gates and formed in parallel at COP21.

His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud hosted a virtual MI-5 on Wednesday 23 September 2020, where MI members agreed to work together on developing an ambitious second phase of MI. In addition, MI will continue its successful voluntary model, with members choosing to work together on crucial energy innovation issues. More details on the next phase of MI and its membership will be announced at MI-6 in Chile.

The Mission Innovation Champions programme seeks to celebrate and support innovative individuals who are accelerating the clean energy revolution by working on key clean energy research and technological developments. By supporting cross-border exchanges of ideas and talent and building a community of visionaries committed to the promise of clean energy research and development, the programme activates and engages a new generation of researchers, inventors and leaders.

Ingelia CEO Marisa Hernández Latorre has been awarded Mission Innovation 2020 Champion representing the European Union and, as part of the support programme, MI has organised an interview about her career around sustainability and HTC technology.
